Electrical Safety Tips for CNC Plasma Setups

Proper Grounding Is Critical. Your CNC table, plasma cutter, and workpiece must all share a solid earth ground. Poor grounding causes erratic arcs, EMI interference with your CNC controller, and potential shock hazards. Use a dedicated ground rod if your shop panel is more than 50 feet from the table.
GFCI Breakers and Plasma Don't Mix. Plasma cutters create high-frequency starts that trip GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers. Your plasma circuit should use a standard breaker, not GFCI. If your local code requires arc-fault or GFCI protection in the shop, consult your electrician for an exemption or workaround.
Never Use Extension Cords. Extension cords cause voltage drop, overheat under sustained load, and void most plasma cutter warranties. If the outlet is too far from the machine, have an electrician install a new outlet closer to the table. Even heavy-duty extension cords are not rated for the sustained draw of a plasma cutter.
Hire a Licensed Electrician. Electrical work for plasma cutters involves high amperage circuits that can cause fires or electrocution if wired incorrectly. A licensed electrician will pull the correct permits, size wire and breakers per NEC code, and ensure your installation passes inspection. This is not a DIY project.
Check Your Panel Capacity Before Buying. Most residential garage panels are 100A or 200A. If your plasma cutter needs a 60A+ breaker, you may not have enough spare capacity without a panel upgrade or dedicated subpanel. Have your electrician assess available capacity before purchasing equipment.
